HOW DO I APPLY FOR THE AGE PENSION?
The Government Aged Pension is an important income stream in retirement and understanding if you meet the criteria is critical to your overall retirement plans. Once you understand this, the actual process to apply for the Pension through Centrelink can be daunting and overwhelming. Understanding what your options are early is a smart move.
Some key things to know about the Government Aged Pension are:
- You can apply once you are age 67 or older.
- You must meet certain residence rules to qualify.
- You need to meet one of either the Income test or Assets test rules to qualify.
You can lodge the application up to 13 weeks before you reach Age Pension age.
To apply, there are two options:
- Set up or use your existing myGov account, confirm your identity by physically attending a Centrelink office to confirm your ID, receive a customer reference number, and then go back to lodging the form online until the process is finished.
- Physically attend a Centrelink service centre and collect a paper application, complete and submit in person.
For both options you will need to supply information confirming your assets and income such as Bank statements, superannuation statements, investment information as well as past tax returns. Once you have completed the above steps the approval process can take between two weeks to two months. We know from experience this is a lot of work! Having someone supporting and guiding you through could make a difference.
